PRIMARY school pupils are learning how to become "global citizens" by forging links with children in Africa.

St Winifred's School, Newstead Road, Lee, has joined forces with a school in Liberia for a twinning project.

The school has joined up with the Elizabeth Blunt School in Chocolate City, Liberia, so pupils can learn about each others' cultures.

The link will see children from the two countries exchanging emails and letters.

St Winifred's is also planning to run charity appeals to help fund books and equipment at the African school.

St Winifred's headteacher Mark Corrigan said: "We are global citizens of the 21st Century. This link will form an important part of education for all the children."

Elizabeth Blunt School is named after the BBC radio correspondent who spent much of her time reporting on events in war-torn Liberia.

Ms Blunt recently visited the school to give the twinning scheme her seal of approval.
