PEOPLE living near a major road scheme say drivers and pedestrians are facing huge confusion due to the ever-changing roadworks.

Residents of the CDS estate, next to Thames Road, Crayford, say work to reconfigure the large roundabout at the end of Perry Street, as part of the £23m dualling of Thames Road, is causing major confusion for drivers and danger for pedestrians trying to cross the road.

Residents' committee member on the estate Elaine Willis, 45, who lives in Norris Way, said someone from the council had attended a meeting to tell residents what would be happening. She added: "But we were never consulted."

Mrs Willis said the maze of traffic cones was confusing for both pedestrians and drivers and the marked-off lanes were not wide enough for large lorries to negotiate.

She claimed pedestrians found it difficult to cross the road because they cannot see which lanes the traffic is coming from.

She added: "The buses can only stop further up the road, which means a long walk for pensioners.

"We went out one Sunday morning in the car, and when we got back, all the temporary road configuration had changed and we could not get back into the estate."

She said having just got used to the current state of the road, the lanes were all due to be moved again shortly, as work begins on a different section of the roundabout.

A spokesman for Bexley Council says signed pedestrian crossings are marked at the junction of Perry Street and Thames Road and at Parkside Avenue, only 20m from the original, to enable people to cross safely.

The spokesman added complicated traffic management is needed to keep traffic flowing in both directions.

The work on the roundabout is being done in four phases and is due to last for at least another two weeks.
