COUNCIL chiefs are trying to avoid a sticky situation, by signing up to a national crackdown on chewing gum.

Lewisham Council is one of 15 authorities across the country to pledge its support to the Chewing Gum Action Group.

The group was formed two years ago and works closely with chewing gum manufacturers to tackle the problem of gum litter.

From next month the council will have the power to fine people caught dropping gum on the streets £75.

The council is also set to be given funding later in the year, to pay for advertising campaigns to put the anti-gum dropping message across.

Environment minister Ben Bradshaw says the Government-backed scheme represents a "hard-line" approach on careless chewers.

He added: "Gum litter is a major problem and it is going to be hard work changing people's attitudes and behaviour.

"This campaign is innovative and will educate people in refreshing ways."
