A LANDMARK, darkly comic novel of Edwardian poverty and luxury is recreated on stage. Robert Tressell's The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is being staged at Southfleet Village Hall on Friday and in Higham next week.
The 100-year-old novel was voted one of Britain's top 100 books in the BBC's Big Read competition, beating Bridget Jones's Diary and Bleak House.
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is the story of a gang of Edwardian house painters who create opulent interiors for the rich while their families struggle to survive on the breadline.
Chalkfoot is a non-profit company which brings live theatre to village halls and community centres.
The company also works in schools and with excluded and vulnerable youngsters.
