ALLOTMENT holders are continuing the fight to save their 75-year-old plots.

More than 250 residents have signed a petition objecting to plans to evict plotholders from St Norbert's Allotments in Brockley.

Last month News Shopper reported how landowner UGS Properties had hit the 30 allotment holders with eviction notices, demanding they move on by next month.

UGS has not yet confirmed its plans for the land, in St Norbert Road, but Lewisham Council says it will support the plotholders.

The petition was handed to Lewisham Council by ward Councillor Darren Johnson, who wants council chiefs to act to protect the land.

He said: "The council has said it will support the plotholders but it has not said how it will ensure the allotments are protected.

"If the current landowners don't want to keep the allotments open the council should buy the site to safeguard its future."
