A BENEFIT cheat has been given 100 hours' community service after failing to tell a council he had found a new job.

Ronald Gray, of Balmoral Road, Sutton-at-Hone, claimed £1,253 in housing benefit and £812 in council tax benefit between October 2004 and April last year.

He failed to tell Dartford Council he had found two jobs within this period and continued to claim benefits.

The 59-year-old appeared at Dartford Magistrates' Court on February 17 and pleaded guilty to two counts of benefit fraud.

He was ordered to repay the housing benefit at £5 each week and was told to pay costs of £166 at £10 every fortnight.

The council is taking action against Gray to recover the council tax benefit.
