PARENTS are being warned they face a fine of up to £100 if their child does not attend school regularly.

Bexley Council says fixed penalty notices will be used for a range of unauthorised absences from school, regardless of whether the children live in or out of the borough.

The notices are being used as an alternative to prosecution by the council, where a court conviction will result in a criminal record.

Parents will receive a letter warning them a notice is about to be issued.

It will also give parents details of their child's absences and give 15 days for the situation to improve.

The notices, which will be sent to each parent, will be issued by council staff, although headteachers and police can request one be issued.

Parents will have 28 days to pay a £50 fine, rising to £100 within 42 days, or face prosecution.

Parents who have difficulties in getting their children to school should contact the school for advice and support.
