A SCHOOL for excluded children has been given the thumbs-up in its latest Ofsted inspection.

Newham Pupil Referral Unit, Newhaven Gardens, Eltham, was marked as "outstanding" for its care, support and guidance to its 123 pupils.

Pupils' personal development was also described as "good".

Inspectors noted pupils growing in confidence and improving their behaviour during their time at the school.

GCSE results have improved each year since 2003.

Most Year 11 pupils are on track to achieve four or more GCSE passes at grades higher than expected on their entry to the unit.

The school teaches 11 to 16 year-olds who suffer from severe social, emotional and behavioural difficulties and who were excluded from mainstream schools.

Ofsted inspectors, who visited the school in December last year, also noted the "excellent leadership" under headteacher Alice Hexter.

She was described as having "a clear enthusiastic vision for developing the unit's work".
