A TEAM of 30 volunteers could be on its way to boost police services in Bexley.

This was how many people turned up to an open morning at Belvedere police station in Nuxley Road, to find out more about becoming a police volunteer.

Already Bexley police has been able to reopen Sidcup police station in Main Road, from noon to 4pm each weekday to deal with inquiries from the public, thanks to a dozen volunteers.

Now they hope to be able to do the same at Belvedere.

Adrian Smith, who is in charge of the civilian volunteer programme in Bexley, has set a target of 70 volunteers by the end of the year.

As well as enabling police stations to reopen their front counters, volunteers help with a variety of backroom roles at Bexleyheath police station.

More volunteers are needed at Sidcup and police are looking at the possibility of providing Safer Neighbourhood policing teams with volunteer back-up.

All volunteers have to be aged over 18 and must undergo security checks. They will get full training and travel expenses. Call Mr Smith on 020 8284 9253.
