BEXLEY mayor Councillor John Shepheard has been forced to abandon his role after collapsing at an official engagement.
The 52-year-old was at Slade Green Infant School, Slade Green Road, Slade Green to watch a Nativity play on December 6, when he was taken ill.
Mayoral chauffeur Paul Holloway took care of him and the school rang 999.
Cllr Shepheard was rushed by ambulance to Darenth Valley Hospital, Dartford.
He was allowed to leave hospital on December 8 but will have to return this week to undergo more tests.
A council spokesman said: "He was quite poorly."
Cllr Shepheard has been ordered to rest at home and abandon his schedule of more than 600 engagements a year.
The former mayors, councillors Dennis Daniels, Aileen Beckwith, Ann Lucas and John Eastaugh have joined this year's deputy mayor Kathryn Smith, to carry out all the mayor's engagements in his absence.
