A magnificent first-half performance earned Croydon a memorable double over Abingdon in Ryman's League Division One on Saturday.

An early goal from on-loan striker Kirk Watts gave Croydon the confidence to take the game to their hosts.

The home side nearly got off to the perfect start when Mark Crome cleared brilliantly from Stuart McCleary before Andrew Little produced two marvellous saves to deny McCleary and Chris Ferdinand.

Having soaked up that early pressure, Croydon moved up a gear and scored after just six minutes when Jason Davy teased Aiden O'Brien down the right before putting in the perfect cross for Watts, who smashed the ball home from eight yards.

The visitors continued to pile on the pressure and, after 25 minutes, Croydon doubled their lead when Wiggins shot and John Myatt squeezed the ball in from a tight angle.

In the second half Abingdon began attacking at will but found the Croydon defence in astounding form.

Despite creating several clear-cut chances, it was in stoppage time that the home side finally found a way through. Danny Moody sent McCleary sprawling in the box and Matty Whitehead blasted home the spot kick.

But Croydon held on for the final few seconds to secure a well-earned three points.
