A CHILD molester has been brought to justice thanks to the work of a Penge charity.

The Penge unit of the NSPCC helped convict ex-Scout leader Dennis Ward on October 2 in Snaresbrook Crown Court.

The unit worked with police and social services in investigating the Plymouth resident's activities.

Ward was sentenced to four years' jail for sexually abusing children for more than 30 years. Most of his assaults were in North London.

Deputy manager of the NSPCC unit in Penge, Jean Murray, said: "This case has given recognition to the important work that needs to be done.

"By removing one paedophile, it has made a vast number of children safe."

Mrs Murray warned parents to be vigilant about the whereabouts of their children.

"Parents should know where their children are at all times. They should also give a quick police check to adults who conduct unsupervised contact with their children."

She said paedophiles take on roles such as swimming coaches and scout leaders as it allows them unsupervised contact with children.

The unit carries out investigations into paedophile activities and gives emotional support to victims and their families.

Mrs Murray added: "We do not investigate the case of and support the same children though, as this would contaminate evidence."
