One of the legends of punk, Hugh Cornwell, is set to make a comeback in his former stomping ground of Chiddingfold.

Hugh found fame with punk band The Stranglers whose hits included Peaches, No More Heroes, Always The Sun and of course the classic Golden Brown.

The band were originally known as The Chiddingfold Chokers before changing their name to the Guildford Stranglers, then finally The Stranglers.

It was in Sweden that the band first got together. Having completed a PhD in biochemistry, Cornwell moved to Sweden to pursue laboratory research. While he was there he formed Johnny Sox.

Having decided biochemistry was not for him, he moved back to the UK and formed The Stranglers, who after enjoying more than 13 years at the top, self-imploded. Internal arguments and tensions caused Cornwell to quit and pursue a solo career.

In 1997 he recorded his first solo album, Guilty, which won critical acclaim and re-established him as one of the country's leading songwriters.

After extensive tours of America and the UK, Hugh began work on his current album, Hi-Fi, which he recorded in spring this year.

On Hi-Fi - produced by Laurie Latham - Cornwell's unique style of combining catchy melodies with a caustic wit has been allied to a new cutting edge sound. The album kicks of with the nerve tingling, paranoia-induced Leave Me Alone, which sees Cornwell crying for refuge from the harshness of modern life.

"The way Leave Me Alone was produced really suggests the idea of wanting privacy," he says. "It's the perfect opener for the album."

Hugh will be at the Chiddingfold Live Music Club on Friday, October 13. Tickets cost £12.50 and to book, ring 01482 684995.
