Surreys Joe Porter says his main target is to earn a summer contract for next season.

The 21-year-old left hander made his debut for Surrey in their National League defeat by Northants at Guildford.

I enjoyed my debut but the result was very disappointing, he said. I am more determined to play more games for the first team.

Porter, who lives in Wimbledon, says the influence of Surrey skipper Adam Hollioake spurred him on to better things.

I made 23 and batted at number six, he said. I was incredibly nervous when I went out to bat.

It was good to bat with Adam. He spoke to me when I came in and encouraged me to enjoy the experience and play my natural game.

That relaxed me and I felt I played well. That was one of the better things of the day.

Porter, who plays for Sunbury, came to Surrey in June after finishing term at Oxford Brooks University where he is studying business studies and leisure planning.

Now Im concentrating on my cricket, said Porter. Im in my second season at the Oval.

Im improving as a cricketer all the time and I recently scored 77 in the second team championship.

Weve a semi-final cup game against Middlesex coming up at The Oval on August 6.

The long term target is to keep scoring runs and force myself into the first team.

Porter says Alan Butcher has been a huge influence on him.

He added: Im a left handed batsman and Alan has helped me a lot with my game.

He a great coach and he phones me during the winter to ask how Im getting on.

I need to improve my game against spin bowling. Im working hard at that and trying to build a longer innings instead of batting for one or two sessions.
