A year-long celebration to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee will see Greenwich swinging on a "string of pearls".

Many Greenwich attractions will be part of the String of Pearls Festival which is running throughout 2002. Likening attractions along the Thames to pearls on a string, the festival will consist of concerts, commissioned works, performances, special tours and the opening of many restricted-access institutions throughout the capital.

Greenwich will host events at the Maritime Museum, Royal Naval College and University of Greenwich, as well as less well known landmarks such as the Church of St Alfege and Shipwrights Palace, in Deptford.

A Royal Naval College spokesman said: "We are teaming up with the University of Greenwich to produce concerts, lectures and balls throughout the year.

"Although we cannot yet say what it will be, we are planning something spectacular for the long weekend of the Queen's Jubilee from June 1 to 4."

London mayor Ken Livingstone said: "I am delighted with the whole concept. It opens up our river, it opens up the wonderful history of the buildings on the river and it opens up the potential for extra pleasure and recreation in our city."
