Most Merton residents must be aware of the unsatisfactory state of the Health Service.
Unfortunately it is not only the hospitals that are suffering from under funding. Parents of the very severely disabled children who attend St Anns School, Morden, have just received a letter from the South West London Community NHS Trust, regarding speech therapy. Current funding (and future funding) only allows two and a half days provision of a speech therapist at the school.
The ability to communicate, particularly through speech, is a vital necessity for any child, and every severely disabled child deserves as much help as is needed to develop, to as high a level as is possible, their verbal communication.
The government is pouring millions of pounds into ordinary schools to push up educational standards. It is a disgrace they are not providing sufficient specialist speech therapy to give our disabled children the ability to talk.
