THESE pupils at Snaresbrook Primary School are just some of the hundreds who have taken part in the Guardian's Passport Reading Scheme.

Youngsters at the school in Meadow Walk have been eagerly reading their weekly delivery of the Wanstead and Woodford Guardian...

The reading scheme, which is supported by HSBC and the Redbridge Business and Education Partnership, which contains 15 pages of questions.

For ten weeks, the newspaper is delivered to the school and the children work from it by completing set assignments which are designed to help reading, writing and maths skills.

Each assignment complies with the national curriculum for English.

The questions examine all aspects of the newspaper from editorial to advertising and they are designed to encourage cover to cover reading of the newspaper.

Teachers have praised the scheme for giving youngsters the chance to enhance their reading skills while at the same time improving their general knowledge.

They will also see what is happening in their local area and finding out about the basics of newspaper design and reporting.

The children have their class photograph printed in the newspaper and receive a personal certificate on completion of the scheme.
