Super sub Liam Hatch played a major part in Gravesend's 2-0 victory away to Cinderford in Saturday's FA Umbro Cup second-round tie, leaving manager Andy Ford happy.

Hatch had a hand in the first goal and scored the second as the Fleet moved comfortably into the next stage.

Ford said: "Liam came on and I think the heavy pitch suited him due to his experience in the Kent league. He caused them a few problems and his fresh legs were advantageous."

Hatch replaced Paul Booth in the 56th minute and made an immediate impact. It was his cross-field pass to Jimmy Jackson on the left wing and Jimmy Jackson's far-post cross was met by Craig Wilkins, who headed home.

Hatch netted the match-clinching goal eight minutes from time when he fired home from close range to make.

Cinderford rarely troubled Gravesend and any threat was easily dealt with by the well-organised Fleet defence.

Ford added: "It was one of those games where you go in and get the job done. You couldn't play fluent football on that pitch.

"We had quite a few solid performers. If we had we played them on our pitch I think the score would have been more. But there was good attitude by my players."

Fleet, who will be away to Enfield or Histon in the third round on January 12, played Arsley Town in the first round of the Ryman League Cup last night (Tuesday) as the News Shopper went to press.

Gravesend do not have a league match on Saturday, but will play a friendly at Conference side Woking, kick off 3pm.
