In response to Mr L Gregory's letter (News Shopper, November 21) I have to dispute his comments.
My husband has been a dustman for 26 years so is equally qualified to comment.
The dustmen have not requested this change. It is a way to reduce the workforce, so supposedly saving money, and free workers to cover the proposed recycling scheme.
As for "not wanting to get their hands dirty" that is an insult to the men. Mr Gregory should understand the men work longer hours than in his day and, in this disposable world, the workload is now heavier. Many people are not considerate about bagging up their rubbish i.e. dirty nappies or used sanitary towels left open and unwrapped on top of bins.
I would just like to add that they work for well below average wages (we had to claim benefits before I returned to work).
