A mystery gunman is taking pot shots at black cabs in Wimbledon, putting the drivers in fear of their lives and planning to boycott the road unless the police do something to help.

The random attacks in Gap Road have been going on for about three weeks, according to one driver.

He said shots possibly from an airgun were being fired in the direction of the pedestrian crossing near Pelham Court, between 5pm and 9pm, several days a week. Rocks and stones have also been thrown at the black cabs.

One driver had one of his windows shattered by a pellet, another had his windscreen smashed, and others have suffered chipped paintwork to their cabs.

Black cab driver Andy Dunne confirmed the shots were coming from the direction of Polar Court and said that drivers would start refusing to pick up fares from or drive people along Gap Road if the shootings continued.

Mr Dunne told the Guardian cabbies have been disappointed by the polices disinterested reaction to the threats

He said: They havent been in touch with us to investigate in any way whatsoever. We get told turn down your lights and put your window up.

The chap who got shot at (last Monday) was told by police they were too busy. It would be nice if they could come round and give us some assurance they are handling the matter.

But Sergeant Mick ORourke, based at Wimbledon, said: We are dealing with it. Weve had a number of complaints. We are trying to identify the person who had the gun we think its either an air pistol or a rifle and we shall continue to search for this person until they are caught because it could result in a very serious accident.
