IT is sad that the Christmas tree that traditionally stands outside the George pub in Enfield will not be there this year.
Owing to a shortage of volunteers the Samaritans who usually man the tree have had to call a halt to this year's festivities.
Each week the Independent carries appeals for volunteers for various charities and community groups. There are many opportunities out there for people to take up.
Perhaps we all think we are too busy to put something back into the community but you would be surprised how flexible most voluntary groups are sometimes an extra pair of hands for a few extra hours each month can make all the difference.
Hopefully some kind hearted readers will offer to help the Samaritans next year so that the Christmas tree can make a comeback in 2002.
The Independent is happy to support the Youth Assembly initiative.
It is imperative that the younger members of society have a say on what is going on in their area and this seems to be a very good way of doing it.
Hopefully apathy will not reign and many of our 12 to 19-year-olds will stand for election.
We shall be charting the formation of the assembly and giving you regular progress reports.
