CHRISTMAS provides would-be thieves with plenty of opportunities and police are urging people to be vigilant this season.

Presents sitting in bags or under the tree, often conveniently next to the window, will mean a criminal's Christmas shopping is easily accomplished.

Burglaries are often made easier at this time of year, as afternoons become darker and homeowners are out celebrating the festive season or spending Christmas with friends and family.

Crime prevention officer PC Vic Smith said simple precautionary steps will help ensure that your Christmas is not spoilt by callous thieves.

He said: "Showing signs of occupancy around the home can be an effective way of deterring burglars. Leave a radio on while out of the house and ensure lights are on after dark. If necessary, invest in timer switches and external detector lights.

"It's worth an external check around the outside of your home to look at it from a potential burglar's point of view for example, can you see the wrapped presents under the Christmas tree through the window?

PC Smith also advises residents to be careful Christmas shopping expeditions don't become an open invitation for opportunist thieves.

"Shoppers often make frequent trips to and from the car to drop off heavy bags.

"Leaving items of value in the car, even hidden in the boot, should be avoided. If a thief is watching it doesn't matter how well hidden those presents are, and as shoppers head back to the shops, the thief will know he has plenty of time to help himself.

"Also, while out Christmas shopping it is important to remember that as towns and shopping centres become very busy over the Christmas period, shoppers should beware of pickpockets. Always keep wallets and purses secure around the person."
