A MAN claiming to be a doctor stole money from a Wood Green woman and attempted to con her into undergoing an intimate examination.o

The 56-year-old Lebanese victim was offered furniture, electrical equipment and carpets by a man who said he was a doctor at St Ann's Hospital. He called at her at her house accompanied by one of her neighbours on November 20 at about 5.30pm. She thought that her neighbour knew the man and made arrangements for him to come back the next day.

However, the man came back by himself just half an hour later, saying that he needed to measure the hallway. He again mentioned being a doctor, and said that he specialised in gynaecology. He then said that to prove that she was eligible for the furniture, he would have to examine her.

The woman then telephoned a friend, as she feared for her safety, and the man left the house, taking with him £55 in cash and a green purse, both of which were on the hall table.

Police have said that there have been a number of similar incidents since April this year in and around the borough.

PC Anita Gwilliam, of the Haringey Robbery Squad, said: "There have been other similar incidents with the same suspect description.

"There has been no pattern no particular area, no particular time, but it is definitely the same person."
