THE former head of Bexleyheath School, Clifford Lester, has died aged 89.
Mr Lester took over as head of the then boys' secondary modern school in Graham Road, Bexleyheath, in 1955.
He remained as head when the boys' and girls' schools were amalgamated in 1968 in order to form the new Bexleyheath School.
It was he who introduced 'O and 'A level exams into the school.
The former head of science at the school, Dennis Sale, told the News Shopper: "He was very conscious of the different grades of school which existed then, and he resented it.
He was a very hard task master for the staff as well as the pupils but he did a lot for the school."
He retired from the headship in 1976 and moved with his wife Marion to Kemsing, near Sevenoaks.
He died in Pembury Hospital on November 29.
His funeral took place on December 3 at Christ Church, in Bexleyheath Broadway, just a stone's throw from his school.
Donations can be made in Mr Lester's memory to the Diabetic Society.
