DAVE Knight (UNISON Branch Secretary) is wrong to call for increases to council tax to solve the financial disaster facing Waltham Forest social services.

Britain's council tax is the most regressive taxation system in the industrial world. The thousands of ordinary workers already forced to pay high levels of council tax from their wages will not welcome calls to

increase their local tax burden.

It should be big business and not ordinary people who are forced to pay.

Many multi-national companies earn millions in profits in Britain yet pay next to nothing in taxation. By simply returning corporation tax to pre-1979 levels, public services could not only be funded but improved beyond all recognition.
