AN AMBITIOUS project to regenerate one of the borough's most run-down areas was unveiled by councillors last week.

Proposals for Wealdstone's regeneration include a centre incorporating a library, facilities for young people, medical centre and fitness centre.

Voluntary agencies will also have the opportunity to run an advice and support service.

Members of the Wealdstone Regeneration Steering Group examined plans for the 30,000 square foot ground and mezzanine floor space at Premier House in the town centre.

Due to the project still being in its early stages, it is not yet possible for Harrow's officers to reveal how much will be spent or when it would be open, but it would bring much-needed investment and services to the area.

The space was originally occupied by Safeway, but after the supermarket's departure it is now partly housing Fabric Warehouse. A charitable organisation, Benesco holds the freehold.

"This is an ambitious proposal which will help improve the services offered to the people of Wealdstone and will provide a modern library and community services. The next stage will be to apply for the planning consents and to secure planning for the funding and construction of the development," said land and finance leader, Cllr Keith Burchell.

The plans will see the existing library and youth and community facilities incorporated into the new centre.
