* This week we publish an appeal from an historian looking to trace a former Sutton resident, whose brother an RAF pilot was killed in a training flight just months before the start of the Second World War.

I am writing in the hope that readers can help me in tracing someone who lived in Sutton during the war.

His name is K Jones, and in mid-1941, he was living at 113 Epsom Road, Sutton.

I have checked the Sutton local history archives, which show he was not at the address in 1938, nor in 1945.

His father Francis Jones died from natural causes at this address in June 1941, and his mother, Mary Margaret Rachel Jones, died in the nearby Woodsite Nursing Home, also from natural causes, a month later.

His brother, Francis Roy Jones, who was in the RAF, died in May 1939, when his plane crashed near Dartford. Between 1937 and 1939, Francis senior and Mary were living in Dulwich, south London. They were buried with their son Francis at Camberwell New Cemetery.

I am researching the plane crash in which Francis Roy Jones died on behalf of the Shoreham Aircraft Museum, near Sevenoaks, Kent, and would very much like to contact his family. But unfortunately, K Jones is the only lead I have.

I would therefore be most grateful for any information on K Jones, such as his full name, whether he is still alive, and if so, if anyone has an idea where he might be.

How long did he live in the Sutton area? Did he die during the war? Was he married and did he have any children? If so, where might they be found?

Another reason for wanting to contact the family is that the grave of Francis, Mary and Francis Roy Jones is unmarked, and in fact has always been so. The museum would like to see that the grave is suitably marked, but without the family's permission we can do nothing.

Any information, no matter how small, on the Jones family, K Jones or his descendants, could enable us to see that their grave is no longer a bare patch of grass.

If you can help, write to geoff@gkennell.feeserve.co.uk or 109 Rydal Drive, Bexleyheath, Kent, DA7 5EG.
