ALDERSHOT Town lifted the inaugural Kingstonian Trophy at Kingsmeadow Stadium on Sunday, following a penalty shoot-out win over the hosts in the final. Earlier in the day, Third Division Darlington had beaten Brentford 1-0 in the third-place match after the Bees' Stephen Hunt had missed a first-half penalty (writes GARY EKINS).

Triallist striker Leon Constantine from Millwall drew a blank on both days as Brentford also lost the opening match of the tournament and their first of the season - 1-0 to Aldershot on Saturday.

Indeed, Brentford were indebted to goalkeeper Oli Gottskalksson for preventing Aldershot snatching the lead until eight minutes from the end when Anthony Charles pulled the ball across goal for Roscoe D'Sane to celebrate his debut by slamming home from the edge of the six yard box.

Kingstonian's first match of the new campaign saw a similar line-up to that which finished last season's Ryman League plus Hampton defender Matt Flitter and left-winger Phil Wingfield, who is back for his fourth spell at the club after being released by Ks last December and joining Sutton United.

They beat Darlington 3-2 despite falling behind in the 10th minute when the unmarked Barry Conlan headed home from a corner. Young Liam Collins fired a spectacular equaliser from 25 yards, and Ks then grabbed two second-half goals in quick succession through Tim Sills and Phil Wingfield, who headed in a David Sadler cross.

Darlington didn't give up though, and a goal from substitute Paul Campbell made it a tense closing five minutes before the whistle signalled an all-Ryman League final.Sunday morning's third place play-off saw Brentford and Darlington utilise most of their squads.Brentford had the best of the opening exchanges, with Andy Martin striking a post after being played in by Constantine. Bees were then awarded a penalty for a trip on Jay Tabb, but Stephen Hunt's well-placed effort was superbly saved by Darlington's Andrew Collett. The breakthrough came with 20 minutes remaining when Clark Keltie ran through a static Brentford defence. His shot went in off keeper Paul Smith's leg.The afternoon's final again brought numerous changes to both sides' starting line-ups, allowing several second-string players to stake their claims.

Neither keeper was extended too often and a penalty shoot-out was required to settle the tie.The first seven penalties were all scored, but Greg Ball missed Kingstonian's fourth, allowing Martin Kuhl to coolly slot home the winning fifth for the Shots. Results were:
