ANDY BRIDEN of Herts Bowling Club, in Bellmount Wood Avenue, Watford, came agonisingly close to picking up the English Bowls Association National Singles Championship at Worthing last week after knocking out the Commonwealth Games champion John Ottaway en-route to the final where he was beaten by Hampshire's Martin Sekjer.
The 30-year-old, from Hemel Hempstead, representing Hertfordshire, was in sparkling form throughout the week, but lost 21-2 in the final after rain tipped the balance in his opponent's favour.
"It was just one of those days," said Briden. "The green was damp and his bowls were more suited to the conditions. If the weather hadn't been against me I'm confident that I could have won."
However, despite his disappointment in the final, Briden's performances look set to cement his place as one of the country's top players.
