Tonight sees another big band causing a stir on the music scene perform at the Buckinghamshire Chilterns Student Union venue, Alexandra Road, High Wycombe. Big Sur will be performing at the Loaded nights where the doors are not only open to the students but to the general music-loving public too.

The Big Sur take their name from a Jack Kerouac novel and are a band of musicians who first formed a band ten years ago called The Kooks. Fortunately Daniel Spencer (vocals/ guitar); David Okuniew (guitar/ vocals); Hezi Yechiel (drums) and Ben Nicholls (bass) changed their name and have recently been tour supports for Paul Weller, Ian Brown and The Manic Street Preachers.

Although the band draw their influences from a wide range of artists, such as Neil Young, Dylan, REM and the Kinks, the one common feature that appears to be crucial is good song writing and, in particular, a strong melody.

During the past few years, Big Sur have gigged, written material and experienced their fair share of ups and downs. However, remaining focused and true to their word Big Sur have managed to put together an accomplished debut album simply called The Album which was released on Monday. Already The Album has been receiving gushing reviews from serious music magazines, Music Week and Uncut.

Although certain influences are apparent, it is hard to say Big Sur sound like anyone in particular although reviewer, Ian Moffat of Rock Sound said: "Big Sur sound like Travis, with the REM back catalogue."

Enjoy the acoustic melodies this Monday from 8pm until 1am with an Indie/alternative DJ keeping things moving after the performance. Tickets, available from 01494 446330, cost £6 or £3 with NUS card and the bar is cheap.
