STREET crime and burglary figures are down across London, says the Metropolitan Police.

It has also seen a significant reduction in car crime and homicides.

In figures released by the Met for April 2002 and March 2003, it showed that street crime was down by 16 per cent, with 11,000 fewer victims.

Burglary fell by over two per cent and car crime saw a 1 per cent decrease overall.

Met deputy commissioner Ian Blair said: "These figures show the Met is delivering on those crimes that concern the public most.

"It is a tribute to the hard work, dedication and professionalism of our officers and staff, who have helped reduce crime despite an increased threat from terrorism and unprecedented public order events."

The figures were also praised by Lord Toby Harris, chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority.

He said: "The Met's achievement in reducing crime rates across London is a clear indication that when resources are specifically targeted, the police can make a real impact."
