SPECIAL parkwatch schemes being run by Redbridge Council are proving to be a success in deterring vandals who threaten the borough's parks.

The scheme, already up and running in Valentines Park, Ilford, will now be set up across other open spaces.

It enables park users to gain easy access by telephone to the council's leisure services, who will can respond immediately to an incident, assess any damage and carry out any repair work that is needed.

Signs with a Park Watch hotline number are to be placed on park gates and sent to residents living nearby.

Cabinet member for the council's leisure and libraries, Cllr Joyce Ryan said: 'We're lucky in Redbridge to have the number of parks and open spaces that we have and it's unfortunate that a small minority of people get pleasure causing problems and damaging facilities that the majority of residents value and enjoy.

"By working together I hope that we can reduce these problems."

There are now 15 park schemes operating across Redbridge, the first at Valentines Park was set up in 1999.

The council's aim is extend the scheme to all parks and open spaces in the borough.

It is also looking for people to co-ordinate the scheme. Anyone interested should call Joyce Guthrie, parks management and development team leader, on 8708 3858.
