Mel Simpson seems to believe the petition by Woodside Park residents was considered before Partingdale Lane was closed (Lane closure resulted in fewer accidents', Letters, April 24).

In fact, the lane was closed without consulting any of them.

The consultations between the council and the Partingdale Lane residents, to which he refers, established that the lane's accident record did not meet the council's criteria for expenditure on safety measures.

Accidents in the surrounding area may have fallen since the lane was closed, but there is no evidence to justify Mr Simpson's claim that the reduction resulted from the closure. By any objective measure, Partingdale Lane has a better safety record than many of the borough's other roads many of whose residents would also welcome their closure.
