JUDY Gritton's long-awaited Proud to be in England Day went off with a bang last Wednesday, on St George's Day.

The day began with fundraiser Judy G, her stage name, arriving at Spitalfields market at 4am.

There, Judy performed songs from her Song for Life CD, whilst helpers, including Judy's singing partner and brother-in-law 'Terry Jerome' collected money from the market.

After a couple of hours rest, Judy set off for the Holy Trinity Church Hall in Hermon Hill, South Woodford, where the main events of the evening were to take place.

During the past few months, schools from the East London and West Essex areas have been taking part in poster and essay competitions, to show why they are so proud to live in England.

Certificates and medals were handed out, before Judy and Terry again took to the stage to perform more songs for St George's Day.

Judy said: "The evening was a real success. It was an extremely long day, but everyone, especially the children, enjoyed themselves thoroughly. It was definitely worth all the effort we have put into it."

All funds raised will be donated to the Acorn Children's Unit at Whipps Cross Hospital and various local children's hospices.
