THERE were more mayors than you could shake a stick at for the opening of a new HEAL charity shop in High Street, Barkingside.

The South Woodford-based cancer charity was opening its third shop and helping out were Redbridge Mayor Cllr Dev Sharma, Waltham Forest Mayor Stella Creasey, and Waltham Abbey Mayor Tony James.

Despite the presence of the stable of mayors, it was Ilford North MP Linda Perham who officiated at the event.

Charity manager Barry Bowman said: "She made the opening speech and cut the ribbon then everyone tucked into the buffet."

The charity concentrates on buying equipment for hospitals and funding research on different treatments for cancer patients.

Next week the charity opens its fourth shop in Chingford and, despite intervening local elections, Mr Bowman is confident of attracting another fine mayoral turn-out.

He said: "A lot of mayors are asking not to be excluded even if they don't have seats anymore."
