LOCAL business leaders came together last week to discuss the local economic situation and the impact of the Budget.

The meeting, organised by Harlow and District Chamber of Commerce and attended by MP Bill Rammell, was an opportunity to discuss the state of the economy, the content of the Budget, and its impact in Harlow.

Mr Rammell outlined how the world economy was facing testing times with international uncertainty affecting business and investment.

He stressed how difficult decisions by the Government, such as making the Bank of England independent and bringing public finances under control, had built an economy with low unemployment and low inflation.

He added that the Government was committed to maintaining economic stability whilst encouraging productivity and enterprise and maintaining high employment levels.

He also stressed the links between a healthy economy, strong public services and the success of local business.

Mr Rammell said: "The health of our economy and public services is essential to the success of local businesses. The Government is not complacent we know our public services must improve and the business world is facing some testing times but we have built a strong and stable economic foundation for the future."

Mr Rammell also talked about how regeneration plans underway in the town would be a real turning point.

He said: "We're facing some exciting times here in Harlow over the next couple of years. The regeneration of the town centre is well underway it will bring new companies and new jobs to the town and more investment in the local economy.

"But we must keep our eye on the ball and continue to do everything possible to help all local businesses compete more effectively and grow for the future."
