Old Elizabethans Cricket Club in Mays Lane, Barnet, are throwing open their doors to cricket fans for a colts registration and club social evening on May 2.

The club received a grant of £2,800 from the Lottery Awards for All Scheme and have used the money to fund a brand new all-weather nets facility, which will be officially opened by former England cricketer Mark Ilott during the evening.

The club's first and second teams narrowly missing out on promotion from their respective divisions in the Saracens Herts League last season. The OEs have established a popular colts section and are hoping the registration evening will attract even more youngsters to the club.

Club president Mark Chenery said: "The club have fantastic facilities and even greater potential to become a genuine cricket development centre for young people in Barnet.

"The aims of the club have been clearly defined and they are for the club to grow at both adult and junior level. Cricket, at grass roots level, requires a great deal of enthusiasm and commitment from unpaid volunteers and we are very fortunate at OEs to have the right people (including three qualified ECB coaches), coming together at the right time."

Anyone interested in either colts or adult cricket is welcome at the club's evening, from 7pm, but must first contact Paul Barnfather on 01992 552369.
