Woodhouse College joined the elite this week when it received beacon status for its top-class performance.

The lifelong learning, further and higher education minister Margaret Hodge presented the sixth-form college in Woodhouse Road, Finchley, with the beacon award at a ceremony in Westminster on Tuesday, April 29.

It was recognised for its excellent inspection results and outstanding performance in a Learning and Skills Council (LSC) assessment.

Mrs Hodge said: "This is a local college to be proud of and I look forward to many more following its lead."

The LSC awards beacon status to make an example of colleges with particularly successful management, curriculum, financial, health and community activities.

Each beacon establishment receives funding to consult and share its expertise with others. Woodhouse College was one of 12 post-16 colleges to be registered this week, bringing the total number in England to 25.

Principal Ann Robinson said she felt very proud for all of the staff and students.

"I hope that we will be able to develop as a centre that draws together good practice from all over this excellent borough," she added.
