PEOPLE who lost their local bus route nearly 20 years ago, may soon see buses running on their road again.

Transport for London (TfL) has announced it hopes to extend the B15 bus route into Eltham via Welling Way, from next year.

The proposal will now go out to public consultation.

People living in Welling Way lost the service in the 1980s when the 160 bus was re-routed and they have been campaigning to get it back ever since.

In 1998, East Wickham ward councillor John Lawrenson presented a petition on behalf of residents.

Now TfL has suggested the B15, which currently runs from the former Bexley Hospital site at Joydens Wood to Welling Corner, should continue along Welling Way into Eltham.

A previous plan to extend the route via Chaucer Road to the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Woolwich, has been scrapped.

Fellow East Wickham ward councillor Rick Everitt said: "John Lawrenson and I know how much this news will mean to many residents in and around Welling Way we are absolutely delighted. At long last, everyone's efforts to persuade the relevant authorities to reinstate a service, have paid off."
