Police are appealing for information after the death of a man from head injuries on an estate in East London.

The Serious Crime Directorate at Edmonton is appealing for witnesses following the death of John Byrne, who was found collapsed in Pembury Road, early on Thursday morning.

Police were contacted after the London Ambulance Service attended a call to a man collapsed in the street outside Broome House, at about 2.30am.

Mr Byrne, 40, was taken by ambulance to Homerton Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A Post Mortem carried out at Poplar Mortuary gave cause of death as head injuries.

An inquest is due to open and adjourn at Poplar Coroner's Court tomorrow.

A 44-year-old man was arrested on Thursday in connection with Mr Byrne's death. He was bailed to return to an East London Police Station on May 20, pending further enquiries.

The officer in charge of the investigation, DCI Martin James from the Serious Crime Directorate East said: "We are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of the Pembury Estate at around 2.15am on Thursday April 24 and saw two men walking onto the estate, or to anyone who may have witnessed an argument between two men.

"We believe Mr Byrne was well known locally and may have visited several public houses in the Hackney area on the night he died. We would like to speak to anyone who may have seen or spoken to him on that night to contact us."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Incident Room on 020 8345 4356; if you wish to remain anonymous you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
