FOREST Hill could see a refurbished supermarket and new houses as part of the town centre's regeneration.

Sainsbury plans to construct a new four-storey building adjacent to its London Road store, extending its sales area to 23,000 square feet.

The building will also feature a new retail unit for sub-letting, 11 one and two-bedroom apartments above the store and four two-bedroom flats for affordable housing on Pearcefield Avenue.

Sainsbury's £12m plans also include creating a public walkway linking Pearcefield Avenue and the car park at the rear of the store to London Road, an increase in the car parking at the rear of the store to 98 spaces and the introduction of CCTV.

Sainsbury's Property Company development executive Anthony Shapland said: "If our plans get the go-ahead they will provide a significant boost to Forest Hill, and give our customers a much-improved store and enhance the environment for local people."

Forest Hill Traders' Association chairman Michael Davey said: "Traders are 100 per cent behind this development and we need it urgently. It's important for the regeneration of Forest Hill."

A planning committee will discuss the plans at Lewisham Town Hall tomorrow.
