Old Mid-Whitgiftian Cricket Club are looking to their traditionally erratic batsmen to achieve greater consistency this season.

Despite leading Division Two of the Surrey Championship for much of the 2002 season, Mids had to settle for fifth place after failing to capitalise on several match-winning positions in the closing weeks.

Captain Paul Kember is boosted in his third season in charge by the arrival of former Surrey all-rounder Gary Butcher for the final two months of the season to back up key batsmen Robert Warne and Jesse James.

The retirement and departure of spinners Colin Bryan and James Carpenter could leave Mids short of bowling variety and they will look to new-recruit Bangladeshi-spinner Manjarul Islam Rana, to compliment the seam attack, spearheaded by Paul Gardner and Mike Brugnoli.

A good start is imperative if Mids are to challenge, starting with Saturday's opener at home to Purley.
