Betel and paan will be discussed at a drugs conference for the Asian community in Burnt Oak on Tuesday, May 6.
The drugs a nut and a leaf respectively give a mild high when chewed together, and are popular among Asian men and women.
The conference, at the Sangam Centre in Burnt Oak Broadway, aims to make chewers aware of the risks. Chewing paan and tobacco can increase the chance of developing mouth and throat cancer by five times. Experts will answer questions on the health, legal, social and psychological risks of using the drugs.
The event takes place between 10.30am and 3.30pm and is free. For information, call Barnet Impact on 020 8201 1394.
