People often tell me they cannot contact the police. As a member of the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) leading on response' (or lack of it) I recently carried out an experiment and telephoned 132 local stations around London. An astonishing 40 per cent did not answer!
The Metropolitan Police Service acknowledges there is a weakness in their response to non-urgent calls that are routed to front counters, such as lost property and local information queries.
However they say that other non-urgent calls, such as reporting minor crime, are answered promptly. If you have tried to call your local police station on this kind of matter and have had difficulty making contact, I would be very interested to hear.
