Bottle diggers dug two five foot deep holes in Canbury Gardens as they went in search of artefacts.

Three men using mechanical digging machines created the holes, both five foot in diameter and depth, in the park as they attempted to uncover hidden bottles.

They were discovered by a member of Canbury Gardens police working group at around midnight on Tuesday, April 15.

He heard them using the digging equipment and phoned the police. By the time officers arrived the men had left.

The men are believed to have returned to the gardens the next night but did not disturb the holes that had been filled in and covered by council contractors.

Two years ago, a number of holes appeared at exactly the same spot in the park, which used to be the site of a bottle factory.

Two people were caught and prosecuted. Anyone who notices anything suspicious can call 020 8541 1212.
