AFTER 13 years lying derelict, plans to transform the former Sun Printers site in West Watford were finally approved this week.

The 8.5 acre plot of empty land in Whippendell Road will now undergo an £80 million makeover.

In one of the biggest projects of its kind in Watford, London-based developers Frontier Key have been given the go-ahead to build a modern housing, office, retail and leisure complex, creating 400 new jobs and 252 new homes.

Chairman of the West Watford Community Forum Keith Stirling, which represents residents in the area, said: "I am absolutely delighted that after long last, this ugly blot of landscape is going to have something done to it."

On Monday, April 28, Watford Council gave planning permission for more than half of the scheme with outline planning permission, requiring further consultation, for the remainder.

Despite concerns over traffic and parking congestion, the development control committee, which decides planning applications in the borough, unanimously voted the proposals through.
