MORE than 250 residents are demanding the reinstatement of two dedicated street sweepers who have looked after their Garston estate for the past 26 years.

The decision to move the men, known as "Tony" and "Hank", off the Boundary Way estate is part of Watford Council's cost-cutting programme, which included a reshuffle of waste services.

A petition with 261 signatures opposing the move was submitted to the council by the Boundary Way Residents' Association this week. It is feared the area could degenerate into a sink estate under the new regime.

Chairman Colette Bickham says the two men are more like community caretakers, acting as "the eyes and ears of the estate" and spotting problems before they get out of hand.

She said: "They know about everything that shouldn't be going on, like dumped cars, on the estate. Everyone knows them and they look out for the older people. If someone is away, they watch out."
