Military action to overthrow Saddam Hussain has inevitably caused controversy across Britain with a fair share here in Croydon. Now, however, the campaign is coming to a speedy and successful conclusion and I hope everyone can be thankful for that.

I remain convinced that the action was justified. We must now concentrate on the future. The appalling torture chambers that we saw on TV are now empty, fear is evaporating and Iraqi citizens now have every chance to build a democratic and prosperous nation.

It is also vital that we now pursue peace in the Middle East, so that we can guarantee to both Israelis and Palestinians security and every prospect of building a decent future in that so troubled land.
