(League Cup First Rnd)

WALTHAMSTOW warmed-up for the new season with a comprehensive win at Leigh-on-Sea on Saturday.

The home team won the toss and despite an innings of 67 from Simon Burch, wickets fell at a regular pace. And against some tight bowling and fielding, Leigh were restricted to 141-9 in their 45 overs, with 16-year-old Greg Harris taking an impressive three wickets for just 20 runs.

In reply the visitors lost Andy Wilkes early but an undefeated 60 from skipper Raheel Mirza and 55 by 19-year-old Satvinder Bansal saw the Stow boys home with eight wickets and 16 overs to spare.

A great weekend for the club was completed when they secured a three-wicket victory in the National Cup at Middlesex League team Ickenham the following day.

The home side batted first and made 201-8 from their 45 overs, with M Mills hitting 61 of those runs, with the bowling led by Michael Harris, 18, with 4-50.

Gary Noris (57) and Raheel Mirza (23) helped to put on 80 for the first wicket in good time, although the visitors soon started to lose wickets and fell behind the required scoring rate needed to secure victory despite a steady 21 by 16-year-old Saq Ilyas.

But with seven wickets down and 33 runs required to win in just four overs , Greg Harris joined his brother Michael at the wicket to score the required runs with an amazing eight balls to spare.
