THE opening of the front counter at Muswell Hill police station may become a reality, but Haringey's police chief has told campaigners not to celebrate too soon.

The warning, from borough commander Chief Supt Stephen Bloomfield, came following optimistic statements made by former Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Lynne Featherstone after a meeting between the pair on Friday.

The counter was nearly re-opened last year but the bid fell at the last hurdle as only 30 volunteers, instead of the required 70, came forward to offer their services in manning the desk.

Cllr Featherstone told the Independent she was positive the campaign will be re-ignited after speaking to Chief Supt Bloomfield and also claimed the commander was not against re-opening it on a part-time basis.

She added: "This is very encouraging news and I am delighted that the new commander is so positive about trying to see if the front counter can be re-opened.

"I am optimistic that this time all the good will and community spirit of local residents will result in the front counter re-opening."

However, a spokesperson for the borough commander told the Independent that any possible re-opening is "a long way off".

He added: "Chief Supt Bloomfield is happy to review the opening of the police station.

"The level of volunteers needed must be re-explored, and there is also some capital expenditure which needs to be considered."

The issue of accommodation was also raised, as several new Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are based at Muswell Hill station, as well as a number of regular officers. Chief Supt Bloomfield has insisted he does not want to move any officers or PCSOs out of the station.

Cllr Featherstone is still appealing for more volunteers to come forward. If you are interested call 8340 5459.

The PCSO scheme in Haringey was due to be launched at Muswell Hill police station this afternoon. Haringey will initially be given 11 PCSOs, which should rise to nearly 30 by the end of the year.
